How to include Shopify plan, app and payment costs
Your plan, apps and gateway can affect costs in different ways. Keep recurring charges and transaction-dependent charges separate.
Open the Shopify Profit Calculator →Take processing rates from the actual payment settings
Use the applicable country, plan, gateway and card-type charge. Online rates can differ from other types of payment, and an advertised starting rate may not describe every transaction. The calculator requires entered processing assumptions rather than choosing one universal Shopify rate.
Record percentage and fixed processing charges separately. If you are assessing a particular order, compare its actual payment breakdown. For a forecast with several card types, state how any effective average was calculated and keep a less favourable scenario.
Check whether an additional transaction charge applies
A third-party transaction fee, where applicable, is separate from the gateway's own processing charge. Verify the current rules for the actual arrangement. Do not automatically add one to a Shopify Payments sale merely because a different gateway scenario has it.
Use the marketplace-rate input for an applicable separate percentage and the processing fields for the gateway. An exact charge can be entered manually when the rule does not fit a flat percentage. Keep the corresponding percentage zero if the manual amount already includes it.
Spread recurring costs on a documented basis
Plan subscriptions and recurring app bills continue between orders. Add them to monthly overhead and choose a consistent allocation if you want an operating estimate per order. A hypothetical £60 of recurring costs spread over 100 orders is £0.60 each; over 50 orders it is £1.20.
Include the expenses actually used for the store. Do not count a plan bill in both a per-order cost library and the monthly expenses deducted later. Keep the actual monthly total visible alongside the allocation so lower volume is not hidden.
| Illustrative monthly plan/apps total | Orders | Allocation/order |
|---|---|---|
| £60 | 50 | £1.20 |
| £60 | 100 | £0.60 |
| £60 | 200 | £0.30 |
Calculate the whole sale, including acquisition
Add sourcing, packaging, shipping, discounts and advertising to the selected payment assumptions. A low gateway rate does not establish product profitability if the cost of acquiring and fulfilling each order is high.
Compare a normal sale and the actual promotional offer. If delivery is free or a coupon applies to the price, use the revenue that remains under that offer. This release does not import Shopify orders, so the accuracy of the estimate depends on complete inputs.
A worked example
An illustrative £30 sale at an entered 2% + £0.25 gateway rate has £0.85 payment fees. A monthly plan charge is separate from that calculation.
Before you use the result
- Use current country, plan, gateway and card settings.
- Separate processing and applicable third-party transaction fees.
- Enter recurring plan/apps as overhead once.
- Use a realistic order volume for allocation.
- Include acquisition and the complete customer offer.
Common questions
Does every Shopify merchant have the same rate?
No. Applicable charges can depend on the country, plan, payment arrangement and transaction. Check actual settings and official documentation before using a saved rate.
Does this connect to my Shopify account?
No account import is implemented in this release. It calculates the costs and rates entered and can store assumptions in the workspace. No unavailable integration is advertised.
