VAT on Etsy and marketplace seller fees: pricing assumptions

A marketplace statement can show VAT on fees. Whether it is a final cost to your business depends on your circumstances.

Keep fee VAT separate from sale VAT

VAT charged on a marketplace service is a cost-side question. VAT included in a product's sale price is a revenue-side question. Changing the sale VAT setting does not establish whether VAT is charged on a seller fee or whether that tax is recoverable.

Use the actual fee statement and official documentation for the account and transaction. Do not assume that being registered or unregistered creates one universal treatment for every marketplace service, country or type of charge.

Use the charged amount and recovery rights actually established

If £2 of applicable seller fees have £0.40 VAT charged and that VAT is not recoverable, the direct cost is £2.40. If a recoverable input-tax treatment has been properly established, the profitability cost can exclude the recoverable £0.40 while keeping the charged amount visible in the ledger.

Clear Takings's recovery switch represents your entered assumption. It does not check registration, invoices, eligibility, partial recovery or reverse-charge reporting. Those matters need review against your actual circumstances and appropriate tax advice.

Know which fields the fee VAT percentage affects

The fee VAT percentage is applied to the entered marketplace, payment and other seller-fee ledger. Direct product, packaging, postage and FBA fulfilment/storage inputs are separate costs. Include their non-recoverable tax in those amounts where applicable, or use an appropriate consistent recoverable-tax basis.

An exact manual marketplace charge can also enter that fee ledger. If you enter a tax-inclusive exact charge and then apply VAT again, the tax is counted twice. Use a clearly documented net charge plus the applicable fee VAT, or a complete cost with the additional percentage zero as appropriate to the scenario.

Keep evidence with the pricing decision

Retain the statement or invoice, relevant policy and date of the assumption. A change in fees, business circumstances or tax treatment can affect contribution without a supplier changing its price. Revisit the model when those facts change.

Use a new scenario when comparing old and new assumptions. A historical report should remain an explanation of the decision made at the time, rather than silently acquiring today's treatment. Check unusual cases before relying on the estimate for a commercial commitment.

A worked example

£2 in seller fees with an entered 20% fee VAT rate gives £0.40 fee VAT. Excluding it as recoverable changes the cost assumption, not the original charge.

Before you use the result

  • Separate sale tax and tax on fees.
  • Read the statement and applicable official guidance.
  • Confirm recovery rights before changing the switch.
  • Check whether manual amounts include tax already.
  • Keep direct fulfilment costs on the correct separate basis.

Common questions

Does a VAT number automatically remove every fee tax cost?

The treatment depends on the service, seller circumstances and applicable rules. A calculator cannot establish that from a number or a checkbox. Follow official guidance and qualified advice for the transaction.

Why keep charged and effective fee VAT separate?

The charged amount helps reconcile the statement. The effective cost reflects the recovery assumption entered. Showing both makes it easier to see why a statement payment and profitability cost may differ.
